Detect before you repair

Don’t guess at a leak — get the source confirmed first

A wrong guess costs far more than an inspection. Here’s the difference it makes.

Without detection
  • Dig up the yard on a hunch
  • Cut holes in walls to go looking
  • Lift tiles that didn’t need lifting
  • Assume a full renovation is needed
  • Authorise re-waterproofing blind
  • Panic — and pay for it
With H2O
  • Contact H2O for a non-invasive investigation
  • Get the exact source pinpointed
  • Receive a targeted, written report
  • Spend smart — fix only what’s actually wrong
  • Hand the report to your trade, insurer, or strata manager

DIY Pool Leak Guide — 5 steps to try before you call

If your pool’s losing water, these five checks will tell you a lot before an inspection is even needed.

1 Confirm it’s a leak, not evaporation

Fill a bucket with water and place it on the second step of the pool. Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool’s waterline on the outside. Turn off the pump and auto-fill, then wait 24 hours and compare the two levels.

Pro tip: Repeat the test with the pump running. If the loss is worse with the pump on, the leak is likely in the plumbing or filtration system, not the pool shell.
2 Full visual inspection

Check the equipment pad (pump, filter, heater, chlorinator) for drips or mineral deposits. Inspect the pool shell for cracks, liner tears, loose tiles, or skimmer separation. Check underwater lights and the conduit running to the junction box. Look around the pool for soggy soil, puddles, or erosion.

3 Pump on vs pump off

If water loss is worse with the pump running, the leak is likely on the pressure side — plumbing or filtration. If the loss stays the same (or is worse) with the pump off, the leak is more likely in the shell, liner, or fittings.

4 The dye test

With the pump off, gently release dye or food colouring near suspected cracks, jets, fittings, or the main drain. If there’s a leak nearby, the dye will stream toward it. Use red dye as standard, yellow for dark-coloured pools, and blue for light-coloured pools.

5 Test the plumbing lines

Plug the return lines and watch whether the water level stabilises — this can point toward a plumbing leak. From here, professional testing uses pressure and acoustic equipment to pinpoint the exact location.

When to call a professional: normal evaporation on the Gold Coast typically runs 2–10mm/day depending on weather. If your pool is losing more than 5mm/day above that normal evaporation rate, can’t isolate the source yourself, you suspect a structural crack, or you need a written report for insurance, strata, or warranty purposes, it’s time to bring in an inspection. Professional pool leak detection typically runs $350–$1,000, averaging around $400.

Independent findings your insurer, strata manager, or builder can rely on

Bathroom, balcony, kitchen, roof, and water-main leaks are the claims that hinge on getting the cause right the first time. Because Darren investigates every case personally — with no repair arm attached to these services — the written report you receive is unbiased, detailed, and accepted by the people who need to sign off on it.

Why it holds up

We only investigate and report on bathroom, balcony, kitchen, roof, and water-main leaks — we don’t carry out the repair work ourselves. That separation means there’s nothing to gain from over-diagnosing, and every report stands on its own when it lands on an insurer’s or strata manager’s desk.

How it works

A clear, methodical process — every time

Every job follows the same non-invasive approach, whatever’s leaking.

  • Site assessmentUnderstand what you’ve noticed and walk the property for likely problem areas.
  • Thermal & moisture testingLocate the temperature and moisture signatures water leaves behind.
  • Source confirmationCross-check findings so you get a definite answer, not a guess.
  • Written reportA plain-English, shareable document for your tradesperson, insurer, or strata manager.

Common questions

Leak detection on the Gold Coast — what you need to know

What areas do you service?

We service the Gold Coast, Tweed Heads, Northern NSW, and the Hinterland. We don’t currently service Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, or Caloundra.

Will I need to cut tiles, walls, or dig up my yard?

No. Our inspections are entirely non-invasive — thermal imaging, moisture mapping, and controlled testing locate the source without cutting, drilling, or digging.

Do you repair the leaks you find?

For pool and spa leaks, yes — we find and repair under our “We Find the Leak or You Do Not Pay” guarantee. For bathroom, balcony, kitchen, roof, water mains, and mould investigations, we only detect and report, so our findings stay independent and unbiased.

Who will actually attend my property?

Darren — the owner — attends every job personally. Juanita handles bookings and scheduling from the office, so you’re always speaking with someone who knows your job.
